Hello to all the Belgian LUG,

I contact you on behalf of Laurence Van de Walle.

She organise a conference on Software Patent at the European Parlement
on the 26/11/2002. We need to fight for our right and operating system
of choice. Software Patent could damage innovation, increase monopoly,
jeopardize free and opensource software development.

As far as I understand it is very important to demonstrate that there is
an interest on this topic and that it is not just a legal regulation on a
very technical and uninteresting topic.

So if you want to see RMS (Richard Stallman) and other speaker on this
topic, you better free some of your time to be present. Also please notice
that for security reason, you must "register" for the event.
This is a security issue, otherwise there is no way to enter the Building.

Could you be so kind to propagate the following information to your member
using your news/web site or mailing-list or words of mouth?

Thanks in advance.

(sorry no dutch version but translation are welcome)

David GLAUDE (free software programmer during my free time)

No ePattents !
Richard Stallman, father of the Free software, will participate in a
conference by the Greens/Efa in Brussels on 26 Nov. along with JP
Berlan, Brian Kahin, ... and MEPs of several political groups (PSE,
PPE, Greens/Efa, GUE, ELDR, Radicals) to draw the attention on the
dangerous consequences of the directive on software pattents
(com2002/092 on pattents on computer-implemented inventions). This
directive allows pattenting on business methods, softwares,
mathematics, thus ideas ... while most economists and computer
specialists agree that copyright is enough to protect sofwares and
that pattents, hinder innovation and favor players on the market like
Microsoft. The Commission should rather gain control on the European
Pattent Office.
